Would you believe this all started with an advertisement on a real estate website? Kristyn and Spencer found Mount Gilead House listed "for rent" at a price that was too good to be true. A little investigation and a few clicks led them to the Fairfax Parks Resident Curator Program (RCP). Two years later, they are on a personal and professional adventure.
Studying the past has always been a passion for Kristyn. She has been a social studies teacher for over ten years and has never missed an opportunity to share some historical trivia. Her personal philosophy of bringing history to life became very real with the prospect of taking on a project like Mount Gilead. Spencer's experience with project management in the construction industry was a perfect compliment to Kristyn's enthusiasm. Their application was selected for the resident curatorship by unanimous vote early in 2024. That May they formed The Mount Gilead Project, a nonprofit to support the rehabilitation work at the historic house and promote local history education. Through hands on engagement and history-inspired events, The Mount Gilead Project aims to promote the importance and impact of historic preservation as a community endeavor.
Together Kristyn and Spencer are looking forward to Mount Gilead House becoming a home again as they raise their family and continue this unique opportunity.
The Mount Gilead Project is a 501(c)3 chartered in the Commonwealth of Virginia dedicated to the long-term stewardship of Mount Gilead House. Our work is conducted under a formal agreement with the Fairfax County Park Authority Resident Curator Program, ensuring all rehabilitation plans meet the highest standards for historic preservation as outlined by the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.
